A project aiming at the promotion of respect for diversity

The Elele project is a social intervention project aiming at the promotion of respect for diversity through  artistic activities.
During the period 2003-2005 the project activities focused on ameliorating the living conditions of Greek Turkish - speaking families of Eleusis.
The project is funded by the Bernard van Leer Foundation and the Municipality of Eleusis.
 
Objectives
 
The project aims at the following objectives:
·      to cultivate in children a feeling of belongingness, confirming their identity and raising their self-esteem, while improving their Greek language skills and enabling them to participate more actively in the classroom, improving thus their school performance
·      to empower parents so that they can better support their children’s education
·      to support parents taking initiatives that would make them more visible to the community
·      to sensitise educators and social agents to the skills, aptitude and needs of children of diverse backgrounds, so that they come to question the assumed supremacy of one versus another background, cultivating a respect for the right to be different and an appreciation of the richness that diversity offers us
·      to train educators in innovative instructional techniques that focus on artistic activities
·      to get local authorities involved in actively supporting actions that promote respect
to diversity
·      to document the process of learning and change as a result of the programme so that further innovating sensitive to diversity teaching strategies are developed
·      to network at the national and European level with the purpose of disseminating accumulated knowledge and ideas for new instructional and policy-making strategies
 
Content
 
The project includes:
·      A programme for children focused on artistic activities
·      An empowerment/support programme for parents
·      Sensitisation and training of teachers to anti-bias education
·      Continued contact and collaboration with local authorities.
·      Ongoing research and documentation of the process

encourage children to participate as active citizens through activities that initiate them to democratic procedures and offer them the opportunity to experience the meaning of social intervention.

support parents’ belonging to minorities and to encourage them to  take initiatives that would make them more visible to the community;

sensitise educators and social agents to the skills, aptitude and needs of children of diverse backgrounds, so that they come to question the assumed supremacy of one versus another background, cultivating a respect for the right to be different and an appreciation of the richness that diversity offers us;

 support educators in applying innovative instructional techniques that focus on artistic activities.
