Parliament visit by children on the occasion of Children’s Day in –December 11, 2009

Children from various primary schools and after school centers of the Attica area, visited the Greek parliament on Dec. 11 on the occasion of Children’s Day. The initiative was undertaken by the Children’s Rights Network (www.ddp.org.gr) with the collaboration of the Centre for Artistic and Pedagogical Training- “Schedia” or raft in english (www.schedia-art.gr).

The children, aged 5-11, accompanied by their teachers, met with Members of Parliament that have expressed sensitivity towards children’s rights issues and have worked towards the observance of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The children were given the chance to raise issues pertaining to their rights via drawings presented to the MPs while they also directly voiced their concerns on related issues. The children from Schedia’s intercultural centre in Elefsina presented the MPs with a special gift, a book of their drawings through which the issue of marginalization was raised.

As the Greek parliament is the institutional guarantor of the rights of every citizen, the children asked the MPs to show particular care for the rights of every child and especially for those children exposed to social and cultural marginalization.
